The Safe Use Of Chemical Drain Cleaners To Clear Slow Moving Drains
Caustic chemical drain cleaners are best left in the hands of professional plumbers. Do not despair, though. There biological cleaners might be just what you need to keep your drains running. The hazards of caustic drain cleaners are legion and, I believe, far outweigh the potential dangers to life and property. When used by professionals in situations that call for them, they can be an effective solution. In cases where drain jetters, machines that force water into drains at high pressure, or sewer machines, machines that use cables to push and rotate a cutter through the drain pipe, are not practical, then these chemicals may be used by a licensed professional.

Biochemical cleaners often use bacteria or yeast to clean drains are generally not caustic but still have cautions to observe. In most cases these could be used by any adult who can follow directions. As always, the cautions on the product and directions must be observed. They are often eye irritants and, of course, not safe for ingestion!

The Safe Use Of Chemical Drain Cleaners To Clear Slow Moving Drains
The use of chemicals to clean a clogged drain can be effective but there are many hazards. This list of hazards is not complete. It is imperative that you read the cautions on the product label and included literature as well as the Material Data Safety Sheet (MSDS) on the product before use. The MSDS can be found on the Internet or the company can be called to have them fax a copy to you. With few exceptions, chemical drain cleaners are highly caustic, react violently with water and emit poisonous fumes. The exception to this rule are drain cleaners that rely completely on biological means such as bacteria to consume the organic material which causes slow drainage, Chloroben PT-4 is one example.

• Should a plumber be called to clear the drain it is possible the chemicals used may damage the plumber's equipment. The use of such chemicals may injure the plumber as well. You may be held liable if you do not inform the company that you have used them.
• Sodium Hydroxide produces caustic fumes that are colorless and nearly odorless. I know of no caustic drain chemicals that do not produce dangerous gases.
• With some chemical cleaners the heat produced as the drain is cleaned may cause plastic pipe to melt.
• If the drain is not cleared by the chemical agent then a sewer machine, jetter, or blow bag may be required to finish the job. If the chemical remains active complications may arise. These include: covering the drain cable with corrosive acid, acid may be pushed into the drain system and come out in the bathroom or elsewhere, heat may build up at the point of stoppage and damage the drain pipe.
• Poisonous gas released into the air may cause severe injury or even death. Some pets, such as birds, are easily killed by even a small amount of poisonous gas (remember the canary in the coal mines). It is critical to insure that you have adequate ventilation and that all pets and people are nowhere near where these products are used.
• Always pour liquid acid into water not water into acid! If you put water into liquid acid it can explode upward! Some hydrogen sulfide cleaners have this reversed because they are in solid form and covered with wax.
• Some acids will continue to get hot over time such as hydrochloric acid. Leaving such cleaners in toilets or urinals beyond the time indicated on the label can cause them to crack or explode.
• Chemical drain cleaners work on organic material to break it down; some of them work quite quickly. Your body is organic material and you can suffer severe burns from improper use or accidental contact.
Please keep in mind that the above are only a few possible dangers of caustic drain cleaners.
In most cases chemical drain cleaners are better used on slow drains and not drains that are fully stopped. If the drain is running slowly then the chemical, in most cases, should be able to clean out the organic material causing the problem and pass through the drain system without damaging plastic pipe. If the drain is stopped completely, you take a chance that the chemical cleaner will not fix the problem and instead cause more headaches. Again, informing the plumber that you used a caustic is critical for their safety and the safety of their equipment.
Now let's talk about the specific uses of these drain cleaners.
Hydrogen Sulfide (Thrift is an example) is a quick-acting chemical that can dissolve organic matter in less than a minute. It does produce heat and gas but the effect generally lasts less than two minutes. It is used by putting it into the drain carefully and then adding hot water slowly. Generally, it comes covered in a wax coating but that is not always the case. Read the directions fully. Remember, your body is organic material! It is used to clear slow-moving drains.
Inhibited sulfuric acid becomes hot when it comes in contact with water. It's effect lasts much longer than hydrogen sulfide. Standard car batteries uses this caustic to digest metal and produce electricity so you can see that the effect of this chemical has staying power if it is not flushed away. It produces a noxious odor that smells much like rotten eggs. It is used to clear slow-moving drains.
Inhibited hydrochloric acid is used to clean deposited salts from urinals and toilets where drainage is slow. It, like sulfuric acid, heats up over time. It is highly reactive with water.
Biochemical cleaners such as Chloroben PT-4 or Bio-Clean use biologic agents to digest and break down the organic matter that slows drains. Many restaurants use such products to keep their drains clean, especially those drains that manage to capture grease. Plumbers often call these products "drain sweeteners" because they also make the drain odor more friendly to our noses. In many cases these sweeteners are relatively safe to use but always follow the directions carefully.
In summary, it is best to leave the caustic chemicals to professionals. Should you wish to keep your drains running well, you should ask your plumber for their advice on a biological cleaner such as Chloroben PT-4 or Bio-Clean. As the saying goes, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
